home sweet home

27 February 2009

The V&A was home away from home for an evening celebrating all things homely. Unique workshops revealed the craft behind everyday household objects, with celebrated collage artist Graham Rawle and designers Arash and Kelly. Domestic rituals were explored through intimate talks, installations and perfomances. Visitors could follow in the footsteps of illustrator Katharine McEwen and find their inner super sleuth to solve the V&A Manor Murder Mystery.

    Who? Where? How?
Murder at the V&A Mansion, South Kensington

Visitors could follow in the footsteps of illustrator Katharine McEwen and find ther inner super sleuth in the V&A Mansion Murder Mystery. Jim, the faithful dog of the V&A founder, Sir Henry Cole, had been killed and was found buried in the Garden. To solve which one of the many suspects did it, in which room and with which weapon, detective packs had to be collected before the darkest corners of the V&A Mansion could be explored. Successful detectives got to customise a specially illustrated V&A Detective badge.

How (not) to Build a House: A Hollywood Manual
Tom Hanks and Cary Grant took on similar building projects - and almost lost their sanity in the process - in two films emblematic of their decades.

A Postcard Home by Graham Rawle
This workshop used interior’s magazines from the last 50 years to create a picture postcard conveying what ‘home’ meant. Original artwork could be posted home to a fellow workshopper.

For those in a rush, Arash and Kelly gave away posters showing how to make the lights quietly in the comfort of your own home.
