The clay model of Janus is now finished and ready for casting. I have decided to make a rather complex, 22-piece mould, in order to try to emulate the fragmented and collaged qualities in some new drawings. The plan is to press-mould, fire, glaze and decorate each section separately, and cement the sections together once complete. I think this will work, provided the pieces don’t go too out...

This is the Crafts Council craft event, two weeks of delicious things exhibited in a pavilion in the courtyard of Somerset House so surrounded by fine building of a serious nature. Inside are stalls, shops, booths - describe them as you wish, but each has an individual craftsperson displaying their finest products and willing to talk and show and, of course, sell to you or negotiate a commission...

This, a couple of weeks ago, happened in the Sackler Centre of the V & A as well as all over London. What a happening! Outside the Studios was a constant crowd of exhibition watchers, those going to talks and seminars, having coffees and generally transforming the building with action in the classroom downstairs, the Digital Studio and outside our door. At one stage they thought to exclude us...

We are having a great many of these! And a friend and basketmaker from Finland, Anna-Maria Vaartainen, asked me about them so here we go! They are times when I am available in my Studio to talk to anyone who comes in, show them the small experiments I have been making, to let them handle examples of my work, materials, and anything else that I can help...

Yesterday was Manga Day here at the V&A, and in honour of the theme, I would like to share with the world examples of manga hidden among the V&A's collections....
This sculpture of Puck looks remarkably like Goku from iconic manga series Dragonball Z, despite being produced roughly 200 years previously on the other side of the world.
This example...

After many trials and tribulations, my comics-themed display Stories for Humans is now up in Room 220, and has been there about a week. Images from comics and graphic novels I chose from the National Art Library's enormous collection adorn the walls, along with a public participation comic. I selected the content with a few criteria in mind; obviously they should have some appeal to me...

I’m taking a week’s ‘holiday’ from the V&A, in order to install my sculpture ‘Monopoly’ in the courtyard of Gladstone Pottery Museum for the British Ceramic Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent. The piece is 4.5 metres long and 2 metres high, composed of over 30,000 hand-made bone china flowers pressed into a clay-covered wooden frame, and based on the Battleship...

I begin to model a large ‘Janus’ head, loosely based on pieces in the V&A sculpture collection. This two-faced head (originally a Roman deity) has one face youthful, the other worldly-wise, and looks both forwards and backwards at the same time. An appropriate metaphor, I think, for the Museum and its collections: engaging with the contemporary whilst at the same time...

I was there (so early) this morning.
Darkness. Stab of the alarm. Hot tea. Ringing phone….
…. and a warm welcome to Radio Australia from the soft accented Barbara Heggen and Isabelle Genoux. Then immediately transported to the Pacific through a lively track from the New Caledonian Islands. And straight into the interview.
You can listen to it here:
