This week began with the arrival of Lisa, a third year ceramics student from the University of Westminster, who will be helping me in the studio for the next two weeks on a professional practice placement - perfect timing, in the run-in to the end of the residency. She’s already proving invaluable, as I’ve been able to unload some of the studio donkey-work (glazing, kiln packing, bat...

“Nightclub, top ten beach, liberated bed-hopping local population and ultra-fast broadband…give it a few years and perhaps the Outer Hebrides will be the new Prague or Vegas.”
Gonzo Architecture
Our trip to the Outer Hebrides began at 5.30am in the departure lounge of Luton airport: two teachers, one twenty-something groupie and the students of ‘Studio...

This week at the V&A began with a car journey from Manchester to London, to deliver the timber and plaster armature for my large head sculpture. I started out late after a hurriedly arranged appointment with the Indian visa office in Manchester, and arrived late afternoon following an interesting (albeit unplanned) tour of North West London. I’ve begun to model a third head, this one...

“After spitting and grunting and talking about warfare, prison, robbery and death, we felt man enough to get back to researching silk dresses.”
Full Court Press
The design press have been all over us this week…or more accurately all over Gordon Wu. We have no idea how he deals with all the intrusion and still manages to avoid being photographed. Perhaps...

Finished modelling the second (Chinese) head and made a plaster mould of this one and the Pandora head. Both are rather straight ‘copies’, though simplified, and are merely the first stage towards the deconstructed hybrid heads. As usual, the plaster casting takes longer than I’d imagined, and combined with a day on the Frankenstein project my three days in London are soon...

“Expect Hollywood spotlights next time, so wear something nice!”
Open Sesame
Where were you on Wednesday afternoon? You missed the open studio. We cooked, we cleaned, we decorated the walls…
It turns out an open studio day is a bit like taking part in ‘Come Dine With Me’. We slave away on our MacBook Pros and behave like the perfect...

I thought this might be a good point to share a few hands on images.
In the making of Calculus hundreds and thousands of decisions were wrestled and questioned in researching, collecting, sorting, selecting, organising, ordering, laying out, composing... The process is by its nature, a meditative and slow affair.
I found myself considering how each tiny found fragment of rock laid out in each...

Continued with the Frankenstein project inviting the visitors to my usual Thursday open studio day. Not everyone chose to participate but enough did to keep me busy running between camera, computer, printer and light-box, and they have produced some fantastic drawings and Frankenstein collages. I’ve begun the second modelled head, this one based on a cast iron sculpture of a Chinese...

Taking Time has moved on to its second venue at IC at the Dovecot, Edinburgh. Last Friday I travelled north for the opening. The solid mass, almost oversized, stone architecture and assertive sense of place as the train pulls into Edinburgh Waverley never fails to send a ripple of excitement. It was good to meet Amanda Game and the team at IC and to catch up with old friends. Thanks to all for...

“We don’t want Jamie Oliver picketing the studio!”
What are we doing here?
Our MO is flexible living and working practices. The office 9-to-5 is increasingly out-of-date. Workplaces are moving closer to home, working practices are growing increasingly disparate.
At aberrant we research and design buildings, interiors and furnishings with this shift...
