The Smallest Kingdom - Plants and Plant Collectors at the Cape of Good Hope

The Smallest Kingdom - Plants and Plant Collectors at the Cape of Good Hope

Working in acrylics, my traditional approach to natural-history illustration now incorporates mixed media and digital imaging. The front cover of The Smallest Kingdom is a combination of old and new, reflecting the theme of the book. My botanical paintings are digitally interwoven with historical texts to create a rich tapestry of images and fonts that links the past with the present.

The Smallest Kingdom is a lively account of the botanical exploration of South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom and the diversity of plants that this region has given to the gardens of the world. Many of the paintings and sketches were made in the veld in South Africa, following in the footsteps of the early plant hunters.
