Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga

From a project around the theme of fairytales; I chose to depict the Russian folk legend of Baba Yaga, the ancient witch of the forest, a mysterious and terrifying figure who holds great wisdom. Baba Yaga is a part of the forest itself. She is a personification of our fears of untamed nature, and also of the extremes of human nature - Baba Yaga being the form of a tough, haggard old woman, expressing our fear of aging. This was my first endeavour in doing a complete picture using only fine lines, I feel the complexity and harshness of the media well conveys the physical and emotional depth of the forest and also of the story.
