Heygate Memories

Heygate Memories

This project was based on 'The Heygate Estate' in Elephant and Castle. At the time only 7 people were still living in the entire estate which once housed 3000 people. I got talking to the remaining habitants of the estate to get an idea of what the situation was and how it actually used to be on the estate. Through the media the Heygate was described as ‘a mugger’s paradise’, but after talking to around 30 of the estates ex and current tenants I realised it wasn’t like this at all. Through my project I aimed to push these views to help the public realise it wasn’t so bad after all and that the council was destroying what was once a great community. I created this book to go alongside these illustrations - http://issuu.com/danielclarke/docs/heygateestate - This book contains additional illustrations focused on the architecture of the estate alongside the memories of various former residents. A printed version of the book is available upon request.
