Industrial Revolution

Industrial Revolution

These are two illustrations from a project about the Victorian era during the time of the industrial revolution. I was looking at the darker, more sinister beliefs and practices within society during this time including widespread opium addiction, predominantly among women in the form of laudanum, the treatment of the mentally ill and the common fascination with mortality and the afterlife. Memento Mori was the inspiration for the second illustration, which was a bizarre obsession that people had at this time with photographing their deceased loved ones.

They are both mixed media pieces, incorporating pencil drawing, ink painting and my own photography.
