The Once and Future King

The Once and Future King

While researching my dissertation I had noted in particular the similarity between manuscript illumination and modern animation techniques. I decided to use a synthesis of the techniques apparent in manuscript illumination and modern animation to produce illustrations for T.H.White’s ‘The Once and Future King’ through the medium of digital illustration, while incorporating hand drawn line-work. While doing this, I proposed to take the approach that I believe White would have required. Incorporating artifacts and references contemporary to the timeline in which his work is set, approximately 1400 to 1485, and presenting them in a modern digital interpretation of medieval manuscript illustration.
I believe this has allowed me to set White’s work within a visual context that is at the same time detailed, appropriate, and aesthetically pleasing.

The work led to four full page vignettes, and six quarter page character cameos. These all comprise a hand drawn foreground works, which were then "painted" in Adobe Photoshop, and specially shot photographic backgrounds.
These were then printed on 210gsm Hahnemuhle Watercolor Paper on a HP5500 digital printer using UV resistant inks.
