Welcome to Halesowen

Welcome to Halesowen

These drawings are taken from an authorial project about the life and goings-on within my hometown of Halesowen in the West Midlands. Through recording people there & the places that hold resonance with me I hope to evoke the feeling of association and safety that can be found in the most mundane, seemingly tiresome, objects and locations.

Originally wanting to explore a process of map-making, this idea developed as I took a psychogeographic interest in a place I knew well and the notion of mapping a personal journey; a time as well as a place. By adopting the role of a map-maker I was able to select what 'information' to include; what stood out to me either for good or bad reasons on a route that I took. A focus occurred instinctively upon independent trade, as despite brand shops being quite prevalent in the town's layout and function they do not necessarily contribute to its unique character.

Having wanted to leave my sleepy town after college and dwell somewhere more stimulating, now my mind wanders to the place I can rely on and always come back to. To me this project is as much about home and identity as it is about the undefinably depressing quality of dated industrial British towns.
