1960s Music & Art

1960s Music & Art

I am currently in my final year of my Illustration degree at Portsmouth University. For my final major project I have chosen music as my topic and have taken a great interest in the 1960s era of Rock n' Roll. I have looked at the Politics behind the music and gathered a good understanding of so called "Hippi Culture". My focus has been around the visual responses to drugs at the time such as LSD, mushrooms and marijuana. This lead me to experimenting with psychedelic fonts that would be found on concert posters or any psychedelic posters. I've taken three quotes from my research that I feel could be greater expressed through this psychedelic style. Not only have i used some bright psychedelic colours but also black and white which is unusual for a 60s style piece. The Quotes I have taken are:

Jimi Hendrix - "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know Peace"
James Abbot McNeill Whistler - "As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight"
Havelock Ellis - "A saturalia of the specific senses and, above all, an orgy of vision"
