Companions for the dead

Companions for the dead

In Mexico 300 BC, these miniature pottery figures accompanied the souls of the dead on their journey to the underworld.

They were used in household shrines and in fertility rituals before being buried as companions for the dead, buried next to them in the tombs to recreate a miniature world of life after death.

Looking at them really closely made them seem to come to life again, so I just had to draw them.
