The Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling

My submission is a new illustrated version of 'The Ugly Duckling' by Hans Christian Andersen (translated by Naomi Lewis). It was my MA Sequential Design and Illustration project at The University of Brighton. I made the book by hand and the illustrations are all hand-drawn in pencil, and referenced from Bregentved in Denmark where Andersen was living when he wrote the story. I chose this brief in order to deepen my understanding of sequential design as I would love to illustrate picture books as a career. My personal challenge from this brief was to create anthropomorphic animal characters using my realistic drawing style. It involved drawing animals without the use of clothes or props that seem real to the reader (but are not overly cute), because I believe children love to look at picture books about real animals that they can relate to.
