Drawing from the City

Drawing from the City

Art work from ‘Drawing from the City’ – a visual autobiography by self-taught folk artist from Gujarat, India, TejuBehan.

In the book Teju has narrated her incredible journey into the rich inner world of art, in her self-taught style of lines and dots. The text draws from Teju's oral narrative, and the book is a testimony to the power of the visual to transcend the barriers of language, allowing a woman who is not able to read or write to express herself so eloquently.

Page after page of sumptuous art is witness to a woman’s life, caught between endemic poverty and a unique imaginative world. 'Drawing from the City' reflects upon hardship while also celebrating the remarkable story of a spirited woman.

The book was first published in Europe in February 2013 via Bounce Sales & Marketing, and was printed by hand in India in 2012.
