Folklore of the teeth

Folklore of the teeth

As part of my degree project I presented a series of illustrated books exploring the folklore and symbolism of the teeth in the context of medical anthropology, collective memory and human condition.

The narrative in the books is based on the story of St Apollonia - the patroness of dentistry, the “miracle” story of The Golden Tooth of a Polish boy and Toothache – a philosophical essay on pain.

My images aim to show that the teeth are more than body parts; they are rich in symbolic meanings and shape cultural attitudes about pain, beauty and medical practices. The teeth tell the story cutting across cultures and time.
