Modernist Architecture in Film

Modernist Architecture in Film

A series of paintings of stills taken from numerous popular films from the 20th and 21st Centuries which prominently feature modernist architecture. The series explores the representations of modernist architecture in popular films and was made in conjunction with my dissertation, ‘Is modernist architecture used as visual shorthand for malevolent characters in popular films?’

The architecture in films represent both the utopian ideals behind its initial design and also what it represents today in popular culture. Modernist architecture has often been used by directors as a calling card for malevolence and darkness hidden beneath a sleek facade. It is this duality that makes the buildings an interesting subject for my work.
