Rush Hour - (MFA Illustration Camberwell faces project"

I am currently completing an MA in Illustration at Camberwell College. Our first project was to explore the human face by depicting twenty, expressive faces in an illustration. The brief included a list of several possible expressions and did not limit media, so long as the final submission was on an A1 paper. I picked my faces from life, photographing the residents of my neighbourhood as they went about their daily business. Frustration, joy, anger, and calm were among the many expressions listed in the tutor's brief and I imagined these emotions as they emerged from my photographs. I began to construct a narrative as I moved the figures around the page and eventually composed a complicated street scene from my observations.

The brief also required that one of the faces from the first piece be selected for a second illustration. The hairdresser in my first illustration became the central focus of my second as a grocery-shopping Madonna. I played upon traditional portrayal of the Madonna, imagining this mother to be as holy a figure to her own children as they eagerly await her return from shopping and their dinner.

The third painting I have attached is a preparatory piece. I was experimenting with the materials I would use for my faces project; watercolour, ink and collage. I chose different subject matter because I was interested in other images from my travels at the time but used the opportunity to explore media for the final pieces in my "faces project".
