The Weaker Vessel

The Weaker Vessel

Women were first referred to as the 'weaker vessel' in the Bible. Although a somewhat obsolete term now, its implications still ring true within our society today. The term breeds a learned-helplessness amongst our 'inferior' sex whilst instilling the male with a sense of superiority. I decided to borrow the visual language of the delicate hands and limp wrists of 17th Century portraiture in order to communicate the weakness of women as perceived and portrayed by men.
