Join us and take part in a creative dialogue around the beauty, use and meaning of boxes past and present. This event will take place in Seminar Room 2 of the Sackler Centre for Arts Education (near the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize Display). No prior booking is required.
The Gilbert Collection includes gold boxes from France, England, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland. These small treasures are masterful examples of the luxury arts that goldsmiths, jewellers, and miniature portrait painters of the era produced. The boxes served stylish men and women admirably, as they endeavoured to advance themselves in fashionable society. Beyond possession as a personal effect, gold boxes were given as diplomatic gifts or awarded in official recognition of commendable service.
