Plain Weave

May 26, 2006

Plain weave sample in natural raphia Very basic raphia sample exploring the relationship between balanced and weft faced weave. Rather unexpectedly, given the rich historic textile environment of the V&A, I have found myself drawn again and again to the direct simplicity of plain weave (click on thumbnails in ‘Back To Basics’ May 23rd). The subtle nuances found in the wealth of these tiny fragments have permeated my recent thinking and clarified exactly what it is that I am keen to explore in tapestry. The ‘woveness’ of the medium and the impact that quality of thread can make, are both enduring points of research.
