I am often asked by museum visitors to provide some background about our residency programme so I thought I would post a short overview of our residencies.
Set up in 2008, the Victoria & Albert residency programme is integral to the philosophy of the museum. Building on the museum’s founding mission as envisioned by its first Director Henry Cole, V&A Residencies enable creative practitioners to use the museum’s collections for research and inspiration, generating new readings and interpretations of the collections while fostering a better understanding of contemporary art, craft and design practice.
Since its establishment, and in response to the V&A’s eclectic collection, our residency programme has hosted a vast range of creative practitioners – photographers, architects, jewellery designers, ceramicists, musicians, illustrators, costume designers, theatre groups, digital games designers, video artists and many more. Residencies are programmed in response to upcoming exhibitions, existing research interests and strategic priorities in the Museum, thus contributing to creating a dynamic public engagement programme around exhibitions/research projects or reaching out to communities that the Museum would like to work with.
At the moment, we have three resident artists in the Museum: two in our multidisciplinary studios in the Sackler Learning Centre and one in our purpose-built ceramic studio on Level 6. In the Sackler studios, we currently have V&A Samsung Korean Digital Art Resident Yiyun Kang, who works mainly with projection mapping, and our Exhibition Road Digital Resident Jamie Jenkinson, who is a video artist. Our recently appointed ceramic resident Matt Smith is based in the ceramic studio.
All of our resident artists open their studio to the public at least twice a month to discuss their creative practice, present their research in the Museum and provide a glimpse into their working process.
If you haven’t met our resident artists yet, do come and visit them during their upcoming open studios at the V&A. These visits are free and no prior reservation is required. All dates and times are listed below. I hope to see you there soon!
