Peter Brook from Archive to Action: Theatre Royal Stratford East

Learning and Interpretation
March 30, 2016

This is a guest post by Greise Astrauskaite, a member of the Theatre Royal Stratford East Youth Theatre. The Theatre Royal have been working with the William Morris Gallery on the Peter Brook Outreach Project. The group director is Darnell Shakespeare.

My experience with the Peter Brook project is going really well. I have been learning new skills to do with voice and gesture which is improving my range of acting ability. I have really enjoyed the warm up activities such as the card game which made us show level and status which is very important during our project of Power and Protest. I have learnt new ways of how to communicate within a group with and without speaking which has improved my communicating skills and has brought the group closer together.

The project itself is really starting to shape up and I feel as if it is going extremely well. I think that what I now need to improve on is really being focused and committed to this project so it could be finished to a high standard. Another thing I need to work on is really remembering my lines and making sure I really know them.

I am really delighted to have the chance to work with resources from Peter Brook’s archive. I am also very grateful to be given the chance to perform at the V&A and to be part of this Peter Brook project in general. Unfortunately I could not make it to the William Morris gallery with the rest of the group but I have seen posters and pictures of the artwork and they look amazing.

At first I did not really know who Peter Brook was but had then found out that he is one of the greatest living directors. He was born in London in 1925 and had his first production “Dr Faustus” in 1943. He became a well-known producer at the age of 24! He has won multiple Tony and Emmy Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, the Praemium Imperiale, and the Prix Italia which is amazing!

The play we are working on is King Lear which is about 3 daughters fighting for their father’s land. We are performing King Lear with a twist which will be very exciting. It is looking really good. I cannot wait to perform it with the rest of the group and make it look as good as possible.
