Cleaning of stove for medieval & renaissance galleries - a student project

by Fi Jordan
Senior Ceramics & Glass Conservator

A ceramic stove composed of a large fire-box (498:1-1868) and an adjoining seat (498:2-1868) will form part of the Palace and Home display in room 62 of the Medieval and Renaissance galleries. At a height of 239 cm and weighing 618.5 kg, the object is the largest to be prepared by the Ceramics and Glass Conservation Studio for re-display in the galleries.

The free-standing structure was designed as a wood-burning stove, stoked and ventilated from the back through two holes in the wall, so it could heat a room without filling it with smoke and fumes. It is composed primarily of relief-moulded lead-glazed earthenware and painted tin-glazed earthenware stove tiles. The deep tiles are both highly decorative and functional, constructed to retain heat effectively. The stove (with two tiles dated 1577) was made in Villingen, Germany by Hans Kraut.

The work placement presented the students with the practicalities encountered in a professional working environment. They had to adapt to different surroundings and decision-making and work methodically as a team, which gave them the chance to put skills acquired at college into practice. Although much of the treatment processes were repetitive, such requirements are often part of a conservator's remit and the experience should not be underrated. The two-way exchange brought many rewards, not least giving the students a chance to interact with museum staff and gain an insight into working in a museum environment while the Department had the experience of sharing knowledge and skills.

A gift in your will

You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
