What is Europeana Fashion?
Europeana Fashion is a 3 year project (March 2012- February 2015) which aims to provide online access to over 700,000 works of outstanding fashion content from Europe’s leading museums, fashion photographers and private fashion archives. It is a unique opportunity to showcase European fashion collectively in a digital space and share an important part of European Cultural Heritage.
The European Fashion network consists of 22 partners from 12 European countries, which represent leading museums, archives, libraries and collections in the fashion domain.
How is the V&A involved?
The V&A is one of 22 partners and is contributing 8,000 digital images and associated catalogue records of post 1900 fashion. The V&A is able to use its rich and comprehensive catalogue records and images featured on the Search the Collections resource and represent a number of fashion collections held offsite at The Clothworker’s Centre for the Study and Conservation of Fashion and Textiles.
As the V&A holds such a rich and diverse fashion collection, both historic and contemporary we are often faced with understanding the challenges surrounding ownership, permissions and intellectual property (IP). The V&A has authored IP guidelines for the project. These were created collaboratively with feedback from partners at workshops in Berlin and Florence. The guidelines aim to provide first-hand experience and practical advice to project partners when managing relationships with designers and fashion houses.
In April 2014, the V&A hosted the Second Annual Europeana Fashion Conference - Made in Italy: re-use of fashion heritage and new digital perspectives. This sold-out event provided a perfect platform to reinforce the collaborative and innovative nature of the project. Curator of The Glamour of Italian Fashion, Sonnet Stanfil presented along with others from leading fashion archives such as Missoni, Bulgari and Jane Reeve, recently appointed CEO of La Camera Internazionale Della Moda Italiana. Watch the presentations from the conference.
In September 2014, the V&A is curating the Europeana Fashion tumblr site. The theme focuses on the wonderful collection of children’s clothing held at The Museum of Childhood. The tumblr has a number of previous curations on a range of subjects from Birds of Paradise: Plumes and Feathers in Fashion to An Exploration of Marriage.
