Fragments
The metalwork collection includes many small fragments of objects that are rarely displayed. These are often beautiful, intriguing and revealing. On first seeing them, we might wonder what they are. By examining a detail we can understand more about the whole object - what it is made of, and how it was made.
Each object has an interesting story linked to its inclusion in the collection. One fragment may have been acquired as an excellent example of craftsmanship. Another may be a useful sample of a particular period or style.
Sometimes fragments prompt questions about authenticity. When an object is discovered to be a concoction of old and modern parts, are the antique parts more significant than the whole object?
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
