Friday Late No Strings
explores the world of contemporary graphics, typography and illustration through the lens of independent publishing. Collate your own zine with Publish and Be Damned or illustrate a 1-page comic with Nobrow. Witness 150 pages being read aloud in the Visual Editions Mass Reading Event and enjoy talks by Simon Garfield, Elias Redstone, Tom Keeley and friends of Eye magazine. Take part in screen-printing and bookbinding workshops and enjoy the sounds and visuals of DJ/VJ combination David Wilson and Sam Potter in the Grand Entrance.


All events are free and places designated on a first come, first served basis, unless stated otherwise.
Filming and photography will be taking place at this event.


MUSIC & PERFORMANCE

Sam Potter of the band Late of the Pier and David Wilson, film maker and designer, team up to provide tunes and visuals in the Grand Entrance. Wilson gives a sneak peak into his upcoming project Alternative Advent, which premieres 1 December.

A Live Mass Reading Event by Visual Editions
Various locations - pick up a guide in the Grand Entrance

Witness 150 people reading aloud from Visual Editions’s recently published book, Composition No. 1. Tonight, each ‘Reader Outlouder’, dotted throughout the Museum, reads from a different page of the book. The order in which you choose to hear those non-linear pages is entirely up to you. Instead of shuffling pages, tonight we shuffle readers.

A new publication by artist Tom Keeley (co-editor of Go and editor of America Deserta Revisited) is installed as a series of prints in the Tunnel. The images are a critique on the branded nature of cities and privatised public space. This installation illustrates how the cities and spaces we occupy are becoming places to consume rather than to just be.

Share your photos of the night or favourite typography from around the V&A on our analog Tumblr installation. Take snaps to print and post, and vote thumbs up (or thumbs down!) for other images on the Tumblr columns.

Nobrow Curates

Nobrow hosts two workshops in the Café. Join Jack Teagle and Luke Pearson for a chance to brainstorm and illustrate a one-page comic. Or, choose an animal, vegetable or mineral tattoo drawn by Nick White directly on your hand or arm.

Publish And Be Damned Curates
Sackler Centre Reception
Pick up Publish and Be Damned-designed loose pieces of paper to put together to make your very own zine. Document the night and take home a personalised, well-crafted zine. There’s also the chance to screen-print a cover and to learn basic bookbinding skills (see below).

Screen-print Your Magazine Cover

With three commissioned illustrations to choose from, screen-print a cover for your growing zine. Illustrations are by Eda Akaltun, Hannah Waldron and the Publish and Be Damned collective, and the workshop is lead by designer Mireille Fauchon.

Bookbinding Workshop

Learn basic bookbinding with Mark Cockram, who works in contemporary bookbinding, book arts and printing and box art. This is your chance to pull together your zine and create a well-crafted object to show off to friends.

Visit the V&A Publishing's raffle stall and enter for a chance to win a fantastic selection of prizes including an exclusive screen-print by the street artist D*Face or an entire set of bestselling fashion dictionaries. To mark the transfer of the ARCHIZINES collection of international architecture fanzines, magazines and journals to the National Art Library, ARCHIZINES founder Elias Redstone hosts a conversation about the role independent publishing plays in celebrating overlooked and underappreciated spaces in our cities. With Tom Keeley (America Deserta Revisted), Adam Murray (Preston is my Paris) and Hazem Tagiuri (City as Material). Introduction by Elizabeth James, Senior Librarian, National Art Library Collections.

Tour of Private Eye

Elizabeth James, Senior Librarian, National Art Library Collections and co-curator of Private Eye: The First 50 Years, leads visitors on a tour the display. This display explores how the magazine has used graphic satire and humour to accompany serious investigative journalism.

Eye Curates

Eye magazine, the International Review of Graphic Design, curates a series of short talks on objects from the V&A collection. Engage with the editor of Eye, John Walters, and graphic designers David Pearson (David Pearson Design), Manson Wells (Bibliothèque Design) and Nick Bell (Nick Bell Design), as they explore the various lithographs and illustrations that inspire them. Or, submit your ideas of what Eye magazine and blog should be writing about and have them tested by a 400,000 strong Twitter following.

Just My Type

Simon Garfield, award-winning journalist and author of Just My Type, shares the stories that went into the making of this book. Passionate about fonts, Garfield outlines the progression from those used for the past 500 years to more recent developments in typeface.

Taking Control of the Means of Production: Collections Talk

Join Catherine Flood, V&A Curator of Prints, for a look at the work of the poster collectives and community printshops that served a culture of political resistance in 70s and 80s Britain. Screenprinting set-ups were part of the toolkit of New Left activism and provided direct access to a simple technology that was used to challenge the sophisticated machine of the mainstream media.

Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990

This exhibition is the first in-depth survey of art, design and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s, examining one of the most controversial phenomena in recent art and design history: postmodernism. It shows how postmodernism evolved from a provocative architectural movement in the early 1970s and rapidly went on to influence all areas of popular culture including art, film, music, graphics and fashion.

Power of Making

A V&A and Crafts Council exhibition
The V&A and Crafts Council celebrate the role of making in our lives by presenting an eclectic selection of over 100 exquisitely crafted objects, ranging from a life-size crochet bear to a ceramic eye patch, a fine metal flute to dry stone walling. Power of Making is a cabinet of curiosities showing works by both amateurs and leading makers from around the world to present a snapshot of making in our time.

Private Eye: The First 50 Years
18 October 2011 – 8 January 2012
To mark the 50th anniversary of the notorious magazine Private Eye, the V&A holds a display looking at this particularly British phenomenon. Since it was founded in 1961, Private Eye has employed generations of great British cartoonists. The display highlights contributions by many of the talented and influential artists most closely associated with the magazine including Willie Rushton, Ralph Steadman and Gerald Scarfe. It also features a timeline of the famous ‘speech-bubble’ covers and an evocation of the private Eye editor’s office overflowing with papers, artwork and press clippings.
