How flickr works
flickr is an online photo sharing and community website. Users from all over the world post photographs of every conceivable subject and style to flickr and choose whether to share these photos with friends, family or with everyone.
The V&A encourages you to upload photographs of the Museum, our collections and events and of people enjoying their visit to our Victoria and Albert Museum flickr group .
How to setup a flickr account
Anyone can look at photographs on flickr, but in order to upload your own photos to any part of flickr you must create an account. Basic accounts are free. To set up an account, click the 'Create Your Account' button on theflickr homepage.
The Victoria and Albert Museum flickr group
There is only one offical V&A group on flickr - titled Victoria and Albert Museum , although other users have setup their own groups independently using variations of our name.
The web address of our group is http://www.flickr.com/groups/va_museum .
Alternatively go to any page in flickr which has the search box at the top and in that search box type "Victoria and Albert Museum" including the double quotes (this makes flickr look for the whole phrase). When the search results appear there will be three new tabs showing on the page: Photos, Groups and People. Click on the tab for 'Groups' and the search results will be filtered to list only groups. Our group should be on the list, maybe at the top. Remember you are looking for the group using the full name Victoria and Albert Museum.
How to join our flickr group
You can join the Victoria and Albert Museum Group in three easy steps:
- Click on the 'Join this Group?' link on the group's page
- Read the posting rules
- Confirm that you want to join
Once you are a member, you can share your photos by submitting them to our group
How to add your photos to our flickr group
Once you have a flickr account and have uploaded your photos to it, there are two ways you can add your V&A photos to our group:
Find the first photo that you want to add, on the main page for that photo click the 'Send to Group' icon immediately above the photo and then select "Victoria and Albert Museum" from the drop-down list that appears.
If you want to add a lot of your photos to our group at once, select 'Organize' from the top of the flickr page, go to the 'Groups' tab, select all of your V&A photos from the filmstrip at the bottom and drag them into the Victoria and Albert Museum Group box.
Tagging your photographs
flickr recommends that you add tags to your photos. Tags are single words or short phrases which describe the content of a photo. They help people find your photographs on flickr and through search engines like Google.
They can also be used to include information about where or when a photo was taken. For example, a photo taken in the museum could be tagged with:
V&A
victoriaandalbertmuseum
museum
london
If you want to join 2 words together in one tag, use double quotes: "sculpture gallery" or "Trajan's column". For more inspiration, take a look at the the Victoria and Albert Group pool tagcloud You can add up to 75 tags to each photo.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
