Linnaeus Tripe at the V&A

The V&A holds many rare photographs by Linnaeus Tripe.

All photographs by Tripe in the V&A collections were donated. They come from three sources:

  • In 1861 Tripe and the Madras Government sent photographs as a gift to the School of Design, Department of Science and Art, South Kensington Museum (now the V&A).
  • Nine albums were donated in 1889 by Caroline Lucy, Lady Denison, wife of Sir William Thomas Denison, governor of Madras from 1861 to 1866.
  • A large number of photographs from the Tripe family collection were donated in 1933 by Edith Stores.  She offered them to the V&A with the words ' I do not want them, as this house is not v[ery] big, but if you think that any of them are of interest now, & would care to look through them, I will gladly send them…'

Photographs by Tripe in the V&A can be seen in the Word & Image department, the National Art Library, the Prints and Drawings Study Room and the Asia department.
