Martin Roth, Director of the V&A
Professor Martin Roth has been Director of the V&A since September 2011.
Between 2001 and 2011 he was Director General of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden), where he oversaw 12 museums and galleries. Under Martin Roth's management the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden underwent major renovation and modernisation. Prior to this he was curator at the German Historical Museum, Berlin (1989-91) and Director of the German Hygiene-Museum, Dresden (1991-2000).
Martin Roth graduated from Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen in the Faculty of Social and Cultural Science, and went on to achieve a Ph.D. on the political and historical background of German Museums and Exhibitions from 1871 to 1945.
Martin Roth is a member of the Council of the Royal College of Art, London, the Council of Imperial College, London and a Trustee of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group. He is a member of the advisory board of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Berlin and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation/National Museums Berlin. He is a Personal Member of the German Olympic Sports Federation, Frankfurt/Main.
Martin Roth is widely published and has lectured at the University of Dresden, the School of Design in Karlsruhe and University of Karlsruhe.
