The Mazarin Chest has a companion, which is very similar in subject matter and workmanship but somewhat larger in size. It was purchased at the 1882 Hamilton Palace sale by Sir Trevor Lawrence (1831-1913), a well-known collector of Japanese art by whose name it is now commonly referred to. The current whereabouts of the chest is not known, the last recorded mention of it being in the catalogue of the 1941 sale (Hamptons) of the contents of Llantarnam Abbey, Wales. The only photographs of the chest known to exist are black and white images of the top, front (as above) and part of one side published in the catalogue of the 1916 Christie’s sale of the collection of Sir Trevor Lawrence.

How can a chest of such supreme quality and exceptional size have disappeared like this? Did it suffer at the hands of enemy action during World War II, or is it gathering dust somewhere in a proverbial attic, unrecognised for what it is by its current owner? The V&A is very keen to locate the Lawrence Chest or identify who bought it from the 1941 sale, as this would be of enormous benefit to our research on the Mazarin Chest.

これほど優れた品質の、並外れたサイズのチェストがいかにして行方不明になってしまったのでしょうか。第二次世界大戦中に敵の爆撃に曝されたのでしょうか、それとも、どこかの屋根裏で、持ち主にその重要性を理解されることなく埃を被って放置されているのでしょうか。V&Aは1941年の競売で誰がこのチェストを購入したかを突き止めることにより、マザラン･チェストの今後の研究に大きな進展が生まれると考えています。

This cabinet on a European stand is in the collection of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which houses a number of Chinese and Japanese lacquer objects along with European japanned items imitating East Asian lacquer. The cartouches on the top and front of the cabinet are similar to those found on the lid exteriors of the Mazarin and Lawrence Chests. The quality of workmanship is, however, significantly inferior.

The main point of interest of this cabinet is its incorporation of three Japanese export lacquer panels into its front and sides. As with the V&A’s Vitel Cabinet, these were removed in France from a piece of Japanese lacquer and remounted in the early nineteenth century to form a fashionable piece of boulle-work furniture. The three panels appear to have formed half of the front and one of the sides of a chest similar to the Mazarin Chest.

The Sotheby’s Cabinet’s front panel corresponds to the right-hand half of the front of a chest resembling the Mazarin Chest.

This large and elaborate casket in Renaissance form shares many features with the Mazarin Chest and other examples of high quality Japanese export lacquer produced during the 1630s and early 1640s (see in particular the V&A’s casket in Renaissance form, which is more modest in scale but comparable in terms of sophistication of production). Its decoration includes what appear to be references to the Tale of Genji, but because these are confined to small areas, it is difficult to identify the specific chapters to which they allude.

ルネッサンス様式の精巧なこの大型カスケットは、マザラン･チェストに代表される、1630年代から1640年代初頭にかけて作られた高級輸出漆器と特徴の上で多くの共通点があります（当品と比べて規模は小さいものの、作行きの良さでは劣ることのないV&A所蔵のルネッサンス様式の箱を参照のこと）。加飾には源氏物語を典拠にしたらしき部分も見られますが、小部分に限られているため、どの帖から取材したかを認定するのは困難です。

When placed side by side, the two side panels of the Sotheby’s Cabinet can be seen to have constituted one of the side panels of a chest resembling the Mazarin Chest. Small handles have been fitted into the holes where the handle-plates of the original chest would have been.

サザビーズ･キャビネットの二つの側面パネルを並べてみると、マザラン･チェストに類似したチェストの側面パネルの一つを形成していたことが判明します。元のチェストの把手の台座のあったところの穴には小さな把手が取り付けられています。
