Non-keyboard instruments

This list excludes articles in periodicals and encyclopedias, and is confined to books in the English language except for a few important early works, which are available in modern reprints or translations, and one modern work of reference.

The articles in Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians (5th edn., 1954) will be found useful on most instruments and the Galpin Society Journal (London, 1947 onwards) is devoted entirely to the history of musical instruments and specializes in printing results of fresh research in every branch of the subject.
