New courtyard, entrance and exhibition galleries

Inside the new gallery

The V&A is embarking upon a major development project to create new galleries and public spaces accessed through an entrance on Exhibition Road. The project will provide a world-class space for our programme of high-profile temporary exhibitions. The exhibition galleries will be below street level, with a new courtyard above for installations and events, set within the V&A’s beautiful Grade 1 listed buildings. The courtyard will be open to Exhibition Road through the arched screen designed by Aston Webb, inviting access to the new galleries and the rest of the Museum.

In March, Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) was announced as the winner of the international competition to design this scheme. The project is part of the V&A’s ongoing FuturePlan to transform the Museum and will contribute to the development and semi-pedestrianisation of Exhibition Road led by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. In the future, this development will allow the restoration of the Museum’s historic South Courts.
