Pair of candelabra, by Chris Knight, 1998
When the first phase of the redevelopment of the Whiteley Silver Galleries reopened in November 1996, the Friends of the V&A chose to commemorate this achievement by commissioning a piece of silver. The Director chose Chris Knight (born 1964) as an artist capable of providing a contemporary design and a standard of finish that would be suitably monumental.
Chris Knight, who is already represented in major collections, designs and produces silverware to be used. He regards functional requirements as creative guidelines, not restrictions. From time to time, these candelabra will be used when the Director entertains formally.
Commissioned and presented to the Museum by the Friends of the V&A.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
