Restoring a poster of Charles de Gaulle
This case study focuses on the conservation techniques used in cleaning, lining and mounting a poster ready for display. This poster is of Charles de Gaulle, by M. Degueldre, 1943-1944, colour lithograph, dimensions 1606 millimetres x 1206 millimetres. Translation of the French is: 'To renew our France together, we must walk hand in hand'.
Posters were usually intended to be disposable, so they are often made from poorer quality paper. The typical large format makes them difficult to store without causing damage, and they are often rolled or folded for long periods.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
