Room 54: Baroque, Palladianism and Propaganda
Chair, detail, England, 1730 - 45. Museum no. W.15-1938
Room 54 reflects the flourishing of skills such as decorative painting, carving, metalwork and upholstery in the exuberant Baroque style. Foreign artists and craftsmen, such as Daniel Marot, were important contributors to the style. Prints of Marot's designs show interiors as well as pattern designs based on Renaissance motifs such as urns, masks and foliage. Also here are objects of propaganda and commemoration commissioned during the turbulent Civil War years as well as Palladian objects and interiors. From Room 54, you can also visit the historic interior of The Henrietta Street Room designed by architect James Gibb.
Room 54 is on Level 2 of the V&A South Kensington.
A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
