Room 89: The Silver Lions

Room 89 is dominated by these three splendid life-size, electrotype copies of 17th-century silver lions made by Elkington and Co. in 1885. The original lions were made to guard the royal throne at Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen, Denmark. The lions were purchased for £100 each from Elkington in 1885 to add to the Museum's growing collection of reproductions of famous works of art. They are made of electroformed copper, cast in moulds taken directly from the originals. The copper lions were then plated with silver in electroplating vats.
Room 89 is on Level 3 of the V&A South Kensington.
