Room 54a: The Melville Bed

The Melville Bed was commissioned by George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville, for his new house in Fife. He had spent years in the Netherlands at the court of William of Orange, before returning to Scotland. His new house reflected his knowledge of the most recent European fashions in furnishings. The bed was never intended for everyday use, but, even so, the survival of its original silk and velvet hangings is exceptionally rare.
Room 54a is on Level 2 of the V&A South Kensington.
