The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre

The V&A’s magnificent Victorian lecture theatre was originally completed in 1869 and forms part of the V&A’s Grade I listed building status. Various elaborate designs were proposed for the interior, particularly the half dome over the stage, but the only decorative detailing that was completed was that to the soffit of the arch of the stage. The decoration for the arch was designed by Edward Poynter and hand painted.

In 2011, the Lecture Theatre underwent refurbishment and sensitive restoration as part of FuturePlan. The space was re-decorated at high level with new walnut veneered acoustic panelling below. The raked seating was made more comfortable through the installation of new seating pads. A new acoustic ceiling, upgraded lighting and AV equipment has been installed.

Design

The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre was designed by the V&A’s Design department with Pippa Nissen Studio. John Makepeace designed and fabricated a bespoke lectern for the theatre.
