The Aesthetic Movement sought to create an entirely new kind of art and design in 19th-century Britain. Set free from outworn cultural ideas and moral codes and based upon the most refined sensibility, this was to be Art for Art’s sake’ - paintings which did not tell stories or point morals, but existed only in order to be beautiful; sculptures that simply offered visual and tactile delight and dared to hint at sensual pleasures; and design that, by beautifying everyday objects, transformed ordinary houses into ‘palaces of art’. This exhibition, bringing together key objects from the V&A’s collections and a number of important lenders, explores the unconventional creativity of the Aesthetic movement in Britain.

A gift in your will
You may not have thought of including a gift to a museum in your will, but the V&A is a charity and legacies form an important source of funding for our work. It is not just the great collectors and the wealthy who leave legacies to the V&A. Legacies of all sizes, large and small, make a real difference to what we can do and your support can help ensure that future generations enjoy the V&A as much as you have.
