What Your Gift Can Do

We understand that your first priority when writing a Will is naturally to ensure that your family and friends are provided for. However, a gift in your Will is also an excellent way to remember a charity which is important to you.

You do not have to be an art collector to leave a legacy to the V&A. As an arts enthusiast you can make a major contribution to the life of the Museum by leaving a gift of money in your Will. Similarly, you do not need to have lots of money to donate - all legacies are welcome and can be put to good use, be it £50 or £1 million.

You may feel that you would like to support the V&A but have other priorities at the moment, in which case a legacy gift is an opportunity to make a lasting contribution with no immediate financial outlay. It is also worth bearing in mind that a gift in your Will can be tax-effective as legacies to charities like the V&A are exempt from inheritance tax.

Your Choice

Unrestricted gifts are particularly helpful to the V&A as they enable the Museum to use your gift where the need is greatest at that time. However, we understand that you may wish to direct your gift towards the area of the Museum you enjoy the most. This might be a department or an area of our work:

  • New acquisitions
Help us to add important works to our collections.
  • FuturePlan
Support the ongoing transformation of the V&A by revitalising visitor facilities and redisplaying the collections.
  • Conservation
Help us conserve rare and delicate pieces for future generations.
  • Education
Help us inform and inspire current and future generations.
  • Research and Publications
Help develop the public understanding of the art and artefacts of many of the great cultures of the world.

Read our Legacy stories to see how some of our generous donors have made a big difference by leaving a legacy to the V&A.

Leaving an Object

If you are considering leaving an object to the Museum, please contact us to discuss your plans, as it is very helpful for our curators to hear about potential future additions to the collection.

Thank You

Leaving a gift in your Will is possibly the most personal gift you can make. We are grateful for every gift we receive and acknowledge every legacy in our Annual Review and in other ways as appropriate. We also recognise that everyone who promises a legacy to the V&A is an important donor and we like to offer the opportunity to become more closely involved with the Museum.
