Physical Appearance
Shape: lobe
Construction: two piece of fabric hand-sewn together; edges and opening bound
Opening placement: vertical, but does not extend to the top
Interior compartment: none
Tie: same ribbon as binding
Alterations: ties have been cut off on either side
Condition: foxing of pocket back and slight staining on front

Materials
Front: bleached plain-weave linen
Back: cotton/linen dimity
Lining: pocket front is lined with bleached plain-weave linen
Binding: yellow silk taffeta ribbon
Sewing thread: silk

Decoration
Technique: embroidered in backstitch, outline, satin and heavy chain stitch
Materials: silk thread in pink, yellow, red and shades of green
Design: a flower pot bearing a flowered plant sits below the opening.  Five floral motifs of diminishing size are placed on either side of the pocket from bottom to the top.
Location: only the pocket front is embroidered

Provenance
Given by John L. Nevinson in 1938. The pocket is part of a group of textiles collected and given by the Keeper of the Department of Textiles for the V&A's Circulation Department, which collected items of all media specifically for the purposes of touring exhibitions throughout Britain.
