Stencil with details printed from woodblocks

Given by the Colchester and Essex Museum
This paper was found in the west wing (built around 1730) of The Holy Trees, a house next to the castle in Colchester (Essex). The design is a crude approximation of the 'flowering tree' class of Chinese wallpaper, but printed in blocks of stencilled colour to resemble late 17th-century embroidered panels and bedhangings. A matching border was also found.
