ORONSAY, natural stone on gesso, 100 x100cms, 2005

For some years, I have been drawn to the far end of gallery 100 to visit the embroidered panel by Elizabeth Parker. The continuous lines of words worked in tight red cross stitches form a rhythmic pattern across the ground linen. (See thumbnail image in October 14 posting and www.vam.ac.uk/collections/furniture/

.)

The stones for this drawing came from a narrow isthmus on the west coast of the Isle of Skye. They are covered twice a day by the high tide.
I wanted to make a work where my 'hand' was not dominant, where the stones spoke for themselves, so I decided to lay them out continuously in rows in the order they had been picked up - the size and intensity of each natural mark flowing freely across the board.

Now, when I see the subliminal tonal movement emerging, I know I will explore this music on a massive scale.
