In this photograph there are two light sources, one from the moon, another from the computer, a vital tool in charting the exact position of the stars. The photographer, Mark Klett, trained as a geologist but established his artistic perspective on the landscape of the American West as the chief photographer for the Rephotographic Survey (1977–9). The project revisited scenes made famous by photographers during the extensive geological and geographical surveys of the 1860s and 1870s.
