As part of his ambition to reform modern domestic interiors and furnishings, Thomas Hope published Household Furniture and Interior Decoration in 1807. He illustrated the book with his own designs and included measurements to help cabinet-makers and craftsmen make their own versions.
This page from his book shows the Statue Gallery. It demonstrates, along with the other drawings from his book, the beauty of line that Hope advocated.
'Beauty consists not in ornament,' he wrote, 'it consists in outline…without a good outline, the richest and most decorated object will only appear tawdry.'
