REMBRANDT AND THE 'ETCHING REVIVAL'
William Strang, 'The Model', 1882. Museum no. CAI 813
William Strang (1859-1921)
'The Model'
1882
Etching
Museum no. CAI 813
Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides
The Model is Strang's ingenious response to Rembrandt's etching of a sleeping woman. The woman's pose is nearly identical in both compositions, and the artist behind her (a self-portrait of Strang himself) would see precisely the view that Rembrandt depicts.
