REMBRANDT AND THE 'ETCHING REVIVAL'

William Strang, 'The Fruit Seller', 1883. Museum no. CAI 812

William Strang (1859-1921)
'The Fruit Seller'
1883
Etching
Museum no. CAI 812
Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides

Strang's debt to Rembrandt is particularly marked in this print. It echoes Beggars at the Door of a House while reversing the relative positions of the family group and the elderly bearded man. Ionides' collection of works by Strang and other contemporary etchers working in a similar vein complemented his major sequence of Rembrandts.
