The Cottage in a Cornfield John Constable (1776-1837) about 1817 or 1833 Great Britain, probably Oil on canvas 62 x 51.5 cm Museum no. 1631-1888 Bequeathed by Isabel Constable, daughter of the artist Constable based the painting on a pencil sketch. The corn remains green on the side shaded from the sun, but is ripe elsewhere. This suggests the month of July. In December 1815 he made a life study for the donkey. However, the painting was not finally 'licked up', or finished, until March 1833.
