While in Athens, Jones met the young French architect Jules Goury, who was assisting Gottfried Semper with his radical studies of the colouring of ancient Greek buildings. Awakened to a new understanding of form and colour, Jones and Goury decided to head south to explore the ancient sites and medieval Islamic architecture of Egypt.
