Photographer Charles Clifford suggests the decaying grandeur of the Alhambra . This gave it a romantic appeal in the 1830s, making it the subject of popular books such as Washington Irving’s 'Tales of the Alhambra'. Jones and Goury broke new ground by being the first to study the Alhambra as a masterpiece of Islamic design.
