Mathematical research has shown that there are only seventeen types of 'plane symmetry', or in other words, flat repetitive pattern. Egyptian and Islamic ornament employs almost all of these seventeen basic models. Jones's careful study of Egyptian and Islamic design would have given him a rich vocabulary of pattern to use in the design of his wallpapers.
